b-boys back

as stated a few weeks ago, the beastie boys are back on the scene with a new album scheduled for release on june 26th. “the mix up” a so-called post punk instrumental album will be the beastie’s first album since 2004’s “to the 5 boroughs”.

now, if you take a look at the shows that i have attended in the past you can see that the beastie boys were basically responsible for my first live music experiences and heavily shaped my taste and love for music throughout the years. so it should be of no surprise that i am very interested when a new beastie boys album comes out. although i have been a little disappointed with some of the newer beastie boys material, i must say that i am curious to hear this new one. i always thought (and hoped) that as the beastie boys got older they would revert more to an instrumental / “check your head” style of music rather than continuing to m.c. and this new record, from what i have heard of it, has them playing instruments again and dropping the mic.

the boys recently played a warmup set a the crocodile cafe in seattle before their appearance at the sasquatch music festival. the setlist for the warmup show goes as follows…(b for my name, sabrosa, live at pj’s, do it, electric worm, transitions, son of a neckbone, something’s got to give, off the grid, root down and get it, egg raid on mojo, tough guy, remote control, mark on the bus, shambala, ricky’s theme, pow, jimmy james, sabatoge, sure shot, time for living, heart attack man, the maestro).

now, i do not know if there are any b-boys fans out there, but this setlist is incredible. in my opinion, it is like a dream setlist (less hip hop – but some really good songs, and more of the great rock / instrumental tunes). if this is the direction that the boys are heading, i cannot wait to see them again.

here is a video for rat cage, from the new record.
